Whoops, Carly didn't get the memo

Carly Fiorina, John McCain's Victory chair and senior economic adviser, was asked during an MSNBC interview if she thought John McCain was qualified to run her old company. Fiorina broke from the standard McCain script and accidentally replied honestly: "Well, I don't think John McCain could run a major corporation".

Wow. Just, wow. The McCain campaign is now in major damage-control mode.

"If John McCain’s top economic adviser doesn’t think he can run a corporation, how on Earth can he run the largest economy in the world in the midst of a financial crisis?" said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor. "Apparently even the people who run his campaign agree that the economy is an issue John McCain doesn’t understand as well as he should."

  • Ahn man... Are we going to do that now? Get on the case of every faux pax? Really?

And, frankly, Fiorina has a point - the comparison is not fair. Running a country demands completely different skills than running a corporation. The only common theme is that both have a budget.

I don't want a government that behaves like their mission is to reward financially their investors. Government is supposed to be so many things that a corporate board is not - safety net, watch dog, etc. And it is also NOT supposed to be a lot of things a corporate board is.

So, Fiorina - who I don't particularly like - has a point. A politician doesn't necessarily have the training to be a CEO.

And no job in the world will prepare someone to be president of a country. Especially a country with the budget of the US.

Sure, that doesn't mean that just about anyone can do it and they will perform equally. It would be good not to be a religious nut and it would be good to have a tad bit of character.
